Owen Brown Grave Site Hike and History Talk
(Jan 14, 2007)
Celebrate local History and honor Martin Luther King, Jr.
Celebrate the Martin Luther King Holiday by learning how Altadena's history has
reflected the larger struggle for Civil Rights over the past 150 years!
After a half mile hike to Owen Brown's gravesite in the
foothills of Altadena, author Michele Zack will give a short talk that
pulls together many little known threads: a slave who bought his
freedom and had a canyon named after him, the Brown Brothers post Civil
War attempts to honor their father's name, local abolitionists who
settled nearby - and the community's interesting role during the 1960s
and 70s Civil Rights Movement. Please join us as we celebrate the
birthday of a great leader, our own community's history, and the recent
victory in court upholding our right to visit this sacred site.
The hike is steep in some places and just over 1 mile round-trip from Rising Hill Rd. Suitable walking
shoes are suggested. Below are links to detail maps of the area to help you find the trailheads at
the top of El Prieto ["A"] and Risinghill ["B"] Roads in Altadena. (See Thomas Guide page #535
F2-G2.)
Cars may park in the cul de sac on El Prieto Road and on the paved portion on Risinghill Road.
Please do not drive beyond the cul de sac of Risinghill, as parking is not available at the top,
which is private property.
For those familiar with the local trails, you can also park in Millard Campground (Action Adventure
Pass required) and hike the to the gravesite via the Fire Road.alternate hikes of varying lengths.
Please try to be present at the burial site before the talk begins at 1:00pm.
Paul Ayers and Michele Zack will give brief talks about the history
and significance of this site.

locator map.
This grave site map
shows the specific
location of the grave site. Unfortunately the grave marker that used to be at
the site was removed in 2002 and has not been recovered. The actual location of
the grave is probably at a slight depression on the west side of the level area
at the summit of Little Round Top.
