Nature Exploration for Children and Parents

Starting Location: Millard Creek Campground
Description: Enjoy a little nature walk and water play with your child. From Loma Alta Dr, drive north on Chaney Trail Rd to Millard Campground. Park and meet for nature exploration. Talk about native plants and animals and historical uses of Millard Canyon and the area. You may also want to walk to the waterfall.

Mountain Bikes:  Loma Alta Loop

Duration: 1.5 hrs
Difficulty: Strenuous
Starting Location: Loma Alta Equestrian Center
Description: From the Loma Alta Equestrian Center, take a ride through historical and natural areas with great views and a rewarding dirt downhill. Ride west on Loma Alta Dr, north on Lincoln Avenue, turn left onto Canyon Crest, and then north on Rising Hill Road. Then the dirt road travel starts at Brown Mountain Road down to Millard Campground and then up to Sunset Ridge Trail, where it is mostly downhill on the ACT back to the Loma Alta Basin. Watch out for hikers and equestrians also on the trails.

Equestrian Ride 1:  Eaton Canyon to Cobb Estate
Duration: 2.5 hrs

Starting Location: Eaton Canyon Equestrian Staging Area
Description: Explore the longest section of the ACT, if you include the street segments, in this early morning ride. Start at the Eaton Canyon Equestrian Staging Area and ride north along the ACT. The ride continues past Pinecrest and Stonehill access trails of the ACT to the Zane Grey access. Exiting the ACT at Zane Grey, the ride continues west along Loma Alta Drive for about 400 yards and across the Rubio Canyon Bridge to the Rubio Canyon access. Proceed northwest along this access to rejoin the ACT just east of the Cobb Estate. Ride through the Cobb and continue on the ACT to Skylane Dr.

Equestrian Ride 2:  Arroyo Seco to Loma Alta Park Equestrian Center
Duration: 1.5 hrs
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting Location: Rose Bowl Riders Arena
Description: Join the Altadena Trails Day from the Arroyo Seco. Start at Rose Bowl Riders Arena, cross the Arroyo Seco using the furthest west portion of the ACT. After crossing between the JPL parking lots swing north on the ACT to the Altadena Drive Access. Exit the ACT at that point and proceed east along Altadena Drive to Crestford Dr then north to Florecita Crest, then east and north to Canyon Crest, Turn south on Canyon Crest and follow it until reaching Lincoln. Ride north on Lincoln to the Lincoln Access to the ACT. Using the Lincoln Access ride east to Sunset Ridge Rd and cross to the ACT. Go east on the ACT to the Loma Alta Basin Trail, and then south to the Loma Alta Basin and the Equestrian Center.

Equestrian Ride 3:  Loma Alta Basin Trail / ACT Loop
Duration: 1 hour
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting location: Loma Alta Equestrian Center at Loma Alta Dr and Sunset Ridge Road, east of Lincoln.
Description: Be the first to ride the new Loma Alta Basin Trail after its official opening. Ride north from Loma Alta Basin via the Loma Alta Basin Trail to the Sunset Ridge Trail. The Loma Alta Basin Trail quickly changes your point of view as the city disappears. You will hear birds singing, and you might see a coyote. After some 200 yards the trail descends rapidly. Ride east to Chaney Trail as the trail winds through native chaparral and coastal sage plant communities. You will see black and white sage, buckwheat, and sumac in bloom, along with other native wildflowers. This section has been diligently maintained by Tom Nuccio of Nuccio¹s Nursery for many years. Cross Chaney Trail Rd and descend to Alzada Rd through beautiful old Coast Live Oaks and past the remnants of a pioneer cabin built in the 1890s. Retrace back to the Loma Alta Equestrian Center via Chaney Trail Rd and Loma Alta Dr.

Hike 1:  Rubio Canyon Trek East
Duration: 2 hrs
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting Location: Rubio Canyon at Rubio Vista and Pleasantridge
Description: This enjoyable hike provides an overview of the east side of the proposed Rubio Gap trail and an appreciation of the wonders of Rubio Canyon. Meet your guide at the Rubio Canyon right-of-way trail at the intersection of Rubio Vista and Pleasantridge. Walk the flat trail past an exposed water pipe then go down to Rubio Canyon itself. Enjoy the awesome green canyon and go south toward the reservoir. Too much poison oak this year will prevent us from going far on this proposed trail, but you will be able to see much of the trail as soon as you enter the Canyon.

Hike 2:  Cobb Estate to Rubio Canyon

Starting Location: Cobb Estate on Lake Avenue
Description: This trip explores the proposed Rubio Canyon trail from west to east before it is cut and made easy for everyone. Park near the Cobb Estate at Lake Avenue and Loma Alta Dr. Join your guide for a trek into Rubio Canyon, partly on the proposed new trail segment. Enjoy the forest in its natural state and appreciate a wilderness that is nearby, yet hidden. Note: This trip is only for experienced adult hikers and is a trail blazing experience. The trail is washed out and dangerous in some locations. Hikers must sign a waiver of liability to join the hike leader and must bring water, gloves, and have good hiking shoes. Wear long pants, long sleeved shirt, and a hat. A hiking stick is also recommended.

Hike 3:  Loma Alta Basin Trail / ACT
Duration: 1 hr (one-way)
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting Location: Loma Alta Equestrian Center / Loma Alta Basin
Description: Carpool to Alzada Rd and enter the trail, walking west through protected land and up to Chaney Trail. Cross Chaney Trail and continue west to the Loma Alta Basin Trail. At this point, you can retrace your steps or continue down the Loma Alta Basin Trail to Loma Alta Dr or, continue on the ACT to Lincoln Ave, then loop back to the Loma Alta Basin trailhead via Loma Alta Dr.

Hike 4:  Cobb Estate to Skylane
Duration: 1.5 hrs
Difficulty: Easy
Starting Location: Cobb Estate at Loma Alta Dr and Lake Ave
Description: Explore the middle and most urban section of the ACT. Park near Lake and Loma Alta Dr and meet at the gate to the Cobb Estate. Then take the Lake Avenue access trail northeast to the ACT. Turn west on the ACT and follow it past Devonwood, where the trail is being rerouted, and Canon to Skylane. Return the same way.

Hike 5:  Eaton Canyon at Pinecrest west to Zane Grey Terrace
Duration: 2 hrs
Difficulty: Moderate
Starting Location: Loma Alta Dr and Zane Grey Road.
Description: Hike the eastern-most complete section of the ACT and make the connection to Eaton Canyon. Park on Loma Alta Dr at Zane Grey Terrace. Walk up Zane Grey a few hundred yards to the trail on the left. Take the trail north to the intersection with the ACT and hike east to Eaton Canyon. Return the same way or carpool from Pinecrest back to your car.

DIRECTIONS
Loma Alta Equestrian Center and Loma Alta Basin Trailhead are on Loma Alta Dr near Sunset Ridge Rd, just east of Lincoln Ave. Drive north on Lincoln Ave, right onto Loma Alta Dr, just past Sunset Ridge, entrance on the left.

Millard Creek Campground is at the very end of Chaney Trail Road. North on Lincoln Ave, three blocks east on Loma Alta Dr, north on Chaney Trail Road (at the blinking yellow light), winding up to the top and down to a large parking area that has a few shady spots. You may be asked to show an Adventure Pass.
